..................BEARA WAY
................ Glengarriff – Kenmare = 121 km .
................................ (Mooiste langeafstandspad van Ierland)

Beara:
Beara is one of the four long fingers of land jutting out into the Atlantic
.. from the South-West of Ireland.
The peninsula is a haven of tranquillity, far away from ‘coach-tour’
.. country
. and therefore has long been popular with the more discerning
.. traveller.

• Beara’s breathtaking panoramas are dominated by mountains and sea.
• The Caha Mountains and Slieve Miskish Mountains form the spine of the
.. peninsula, which is washed by Kenmare River to the north and Bantry Bay
..
to the south.
• Few roads cross this massive natural barrier, and those which do are
.. spectacular feats of engineering: the ‘Tunnels Road’ via Turner’s Rock and
.. the Healy Pass road with its series of hairpin bends, as dramatic as any
.. alpine pass.

• All of Beara’s small towns and villages are dotted along the coastal road
..
which loops around the peninsula.
•The largest is Castletownbere, a fishing port located on one of the deepest
.. natural. harbours in Ireland.
Picturesque villages such as Allihies and Eyeries are renowned for their
.. rows of contrasting houses featuring every shade of the rainbow, where
.. every house.competes with its neighbours to be the most colourful.

• At the head of Bantry Bay is the village of Glengarriff, from where you
.. can take a short boat trip to Garinish Island, famous for its Italian Gardens
.. with.their subtropical flora.
• At the tip of the peninsula is Dursey Island, connected to the mainland by
.. Ireland’s only cable car. Capacity: 6 people or 1 cow.

• Beara is rich in history, pre-history and archaeology.
Copper and other metals have been mined around Allihies since the
.. Bronze Age.
• The earliest inhabitants made their mark, leaving numerous,
.. standing stones, stone circles, wedge graves, boulder burials and ring forts,
..
dotted across the landscape.

Beara Way:
It is a 196km circular route through magnificently rugged mountain and
seacoast scenery which frequently passes by rich evidence of a heavily
populated prehistoric past in the form of standing stones and
burial monuments.
There are also many fine villages, such as Allihies and Eyeries, along the
route.

.. de naam Beara Way.

Eyeries
Eyeries.
.

The only stage where the path follows the coastline is after Eyeries.

Bevoorrading:
Levensmiddelen geen probleem. Men passeerde onderweg voldoende

Stiles (= overstapjes):
Op de meeste plaatsen heeft men prachtige
nieuwe "stiles". Ze zijn van zwart gerecycled
plastic en aluminium. Dus zeer duurzaam.

. Advies:
. 1. Walk on the right-hand side of the road so that you can see
..... oncoming traffic.
. 2. Cross the road well before a sharp right-hand bend (so that
..... oncoming traffic has a better chance of seeing you). Cross back after
..... the bend.

Ten noorden van Eyeries waren 2 zeer drassige stukken:

( 'verdronken' rivierdalen), d.w.z. vroegere rivierdalen,

Ria  is a coastal inlet formed by the partial submergence of an
.......... unglaciated river valley.

1. Glengarriff — Adrigole .... 18 km
- Walk down the Castletownbere road for 500m, take the first cross up
. to the right, head up this road for 1 km and enter the State forest.
. It is made of ancient woodlands
(eeuwenoud bos), waar de
. boomtakken
met mossen en neerhangende varens overdekt zijn,
. and new plantations.
- Inside the State forest you will walk through the oak woods and you
. will. also.pass the big meadow.
- After 1 km you will rejoin the Coomerkane road.
- You will stay on this road for 2 km at this point you will head up a
. mountain track to a height of 500 m.
- Furtheron over a boggy mountain trail. Caution to be taken on foggy
. days.
. This route is very well marked in the high ground with markers and
. stakes every 15 m.

. Daar ligt "rough bogland" (
spreihoogveen ½ m dik).
. Op een aantal plaatsen..heeft
men het met een machine weg-
. geschraapt. Daar kun je nu goed.lopen.

- At the top you will have fine views of Bantry Bay and the
. Caha Mountains.
- Walkers will descend down the south side of Glenlough valley
. following a farmers fence of sheep wire for 1km and a half which
. will lead you on to a track and bring you down to the public road
. 800m from Mass Mt Cross.
- At Mass Mount Cross you will turn right down the public road for
. 400m and following the line of the old Glengarriff/Adrigole road
. through farmers fields crossing the new bridge over the Adrigole River
. and ending up on. the Healy Pass road 400 from Peg’s Shop.
- This route has some breathtaking views of Adrigole Harbour,
. Glenlough. valley and many lakes which you pass on route.
- (Mobile Coverage is very limited along the route with some coverage
. is. available as you rise high over Coomerkane valley and south of
. Mass. Mount Cross.

2. Adrigole Castletownbere .. 25 km
- Leaving Adrigole in the morning you once again follow the old coach
. road which initially tracks the Ring Of Beara road before turning to
. contour along the slopes of Hungry Hill.
- Walking above the farmland you skirt Hungry Hill before descending
. toward the north shore of Park Lough (lough = lake).
- From Hollyhill onwards you follow a network of bog roads.
- On the approach to Castletownbere you pass a wedge grave and have
. the opportunity of a minor detour to see some boulder burials before
. descending to the coast and harbour of Castletownbere.

3. Bere Island walk .. 23 km

4. Castletownbere Allihies Eyeries .. 22 km
- Highlights of this day are archeological sites and fine views during the
. climb over a shoulder of Knockgour Mountain.
- From the centre of Castletownbere, head to the west end of the main
. street and take a right turn in front of the Bakery Cafe, following a
. sign for the stone circle (steenkring).
- About 1.5 km along a minor road a gate leads into a field on the right
. and provides access to the Derreena Taggart Stone circle (steenkring),
. a wellpreserved, compact ring of 12 rock slabs.
- After a further 1.5 km waymarkers indicate a right turn onto an old
. turf road heading towards Miskish Mountain.
- The track climbs gently past old turf cutting areas; look behind for
. views over Castletownbere and Bere Island.
- After a short distance the route turns left off the turf road, passes a
. great, rusting hulk of a machine , and heads across open moorland to
. the west.
- The path soon joins a road. Turn right and follow the road for a little
. over 2 km. After 500 m a gate gives access to the roadside
. Teernahilane Ring Fort
(now more recognisable a a raised circular
. mound) and, 1 km further along
from the ringfort, you pass a cluster
. of deserted stone buildings.
- The road section ends at a T-junction where the lane turns left and
. the Beara Way is waymarked onto a forestry track to the right.
- The steepest ascent of the day can now be seen stretching up through
. the thick conifer plantation
(naaldboomplantage) ahead.
. Climb steadily straight up the track until, 2 km after leaving the road,
. the terrain levels out and becomes a pleasant green road crossing a
. spur of Knockgour Mountain.
- The dense forest is replaced by wonderful views across the entire
. western tip of the peninsula, and the coastline around Allihies lies
. spread out ahead.
- The track meets a minor road alongside another prehistoric site, this
. time a stone row.
- Follow the road down the hill, and a signed left turn and then two right
. turns will bring you into the centre of Allihies.
- At the north end of Allihies waymarkers direct you onto a beautiful
. old.
boreen that takes you in a direct line towards the smelter of the
. disused Bearhaven Copper Mine.
. (Boreens are ancient green lanes, bordered by hedgerows and stone
. walls, which have been used for centuries by travellers and to move
. livestock.)

- Just beneath this building, ringed with fences ansd signs warning of
. old. mineshafts, the Way joins a small road, which it follows steeply
. until..through rugged outcrops
(ontsluitingen) of sandstone to a
. broad col at. almost 300 m.
- The excellent views southwest, across the furthest extremities of the
. Beara Peninsula include the humped profile of Dursey Island.
- These views are soon surpassed as the road becomes a gravel track,
. and you begin a long gradual descent.
- A great panorama opens out across the Kenmare River to the Iveragh
. Peninsula, with the MacGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountains in
. Ireland, serrating the skyline.
- After a descent of little more than 3 km, the track becomes a sealed
. road again and you soon reach a waymark directing you up a narrow,
. fuchsia-lined
boreen. Cut here almost 2 km by continuing straight
. ahead.
- The remaining distance into Eyeries (4km) is along sometimes-busy
. roads.
- Today you saw the three possible uses for poor bogland:
.. 1.
sheep farming.
..
2. turf cutting
..
3. conifer forestry ( = sitka spruce plantations)

5. Eyeries — Lauragh .... 22 km
- Dropping down from the village to the coast along a little road, the
. Beara Way now follows the scenic shoreline of rocky headlands
.
(kapen) and boulder-clad storm beaches. You cross numerous stiles.
- Return at the old coastguard station and follow the first little road
. back to Eyeries. Hitchhike here to Ardgroom.
-
. spreihoogveen. Daar zijn natte voeten onafwendbaar.)

- Running parallel to the Ring of Beara road you pass above Ardgroom
. harbour and as you cross from County Cork to County Kerry you strike
. off along a
green road and rise to a gap between the hills.
- Your route then brings you on past a stone circle at Cashelkeelty
. before descending to Lauragh. (Mooie tuinen)

6. Lauragh Kenmare .. 26 km
- Starting from the lovely harbour of Lauragh, you ascend past
. Knockatee Hill and up toward the central spine of the Beara Peninsula.
. You are afforded views back down to the coast and across
. Kenmare Bay to the Iveragh Peninsula and Ireland’s highest peaks.
- Passing the Clonee Loughs you head into the scenic valley of
. Gleninchiquin.
- Turning eastward away from Lough Inchiquin you follow a back road
. uphill before breaking off across country and dropping over the ridge
. you descend toward Dromoghty Lough and stone circle.
- Dropping down toward the coast again, you follow the Beara Way as
. it runs parallel to the coast and onward into Kenmare town.

1 .... Glengarriff — Adrigole .... 18 km
Starting in Glengarriff, at the heart of West Cork, the Beara Way passes

From, Eyeries we take a short transfer to the village of Ardgroom and a
visit to the Ardgroom Stone Circle, one of the most famous stone circles
in the area.
The Beara Way then climbs along ancient tracks and offers spectacular
views over Ardgroom Harbour, before it arrives in the little village of
Lauragh.

9 ... Lauragh — Kenmare .... 26 km
Finally, the trail approaches Kenmare, the 'Jewel in the Ring of Kerry.'
Crossing two mountain saddles, the Caha Mountains provide a wonderful backdrop, before the trail drops down to the Cloonee Lakes.

Reactie van Astrid Borst:

Beste Piet,

Nieuw venster www.trek-inn.com/self-guided/Itineraries/beara.htm

Aanvulling in 2013:
