minder
• Bossington, a picturesque hamlet with only one street.
• Cottages with chimney stacks, thatched roofs, and limewashed or stone walls.
• Porlock.
• Vale of Porlock.
• Porlock Weir, a tiny hamlet and former working harbour, enclosed by lock gates.
• The view from Countygate: a diverse landscape of
1.
heather moorland (op de voorgrond),
2.
a deep, steep-sided, wooded
combe (valley) (halverwege),
3.
fields of pasture enclosed (= omheind) by beech hedges on earth banks (een lappendeken van
weilanden en beukenhoutwallen).
• The walled fields of pasture have encroached (opgerukt) , unfortunately making much of Exmoor ex-moor, and it cannot be defined by moorland alone.
Beste periode:
Half juni ― half september.
zomer
is
daar droog.

Zwaarte:
Middelzwaar.
Routemarkering:
Zeer goed, zoals gebruikelijk bij national trails.
Openbaar vervoer: goed.
Je kunt desgewenst met openbaar vervoer naar
het beginpunt/eindpunt
van de dagwandeling
reizen.
Bevoorrading:
• Lynmouth: church and village buildings.
• Lynmouth Harbour.
• Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway.
• Lynton is a small clifftop town separated from the small village Lynmouth by a 150 m drop.
• The funicular (=kabelspoorweg) connects them.
• Powered solely by water, the funicular is a unique marvel of Victorian engineering.
sterke westenwinden. Vandaar de aanwezigheid van zelfs
hellingbossen.
Trees don’t normally thrive on coasts – too much salt and wind in the air –
but Exmoor is different! The Exmoor coast is the most thickly wooded in
Britain, especially the stretch east of Foreland Point with its
wonderful ancient oak woodlands.
Coastal Path Diversion:
Zie www.southwestcoastpath....
Hoogtepunten:
• Minehead ― Porlock Weir with the more exposed alternative (14 km; 380m ascent, approx.).
This 'Rugged Coast Path' option has better views than the easier option.
• Culbone Church, the smallest complete parish church in England
• Lynton and Lynmouth, known as ‘Little Switzerland’ by the Victorians.
• Valley of Rocks with the towering sandstone pinnacles and wild goats.
• the deep, wooded Heddon Valley with Heddon's Mouth,
• Great Hangman, at 318 m the highest point of the South West Coast Path.
Enjoy it's sweeping panoramas.
• Ilfracombe, a thriving seaside resort.
• The rise of the sea level has caused the drowning of the river mouth at Ilfracombe, creating
a natural harbour. This is also the case in Combe Martin and Watermouth.
• Ilfracombe: view from Capstone Point showing the entrance to the harbour.
• St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill, overlooks Ilfracombe, and has been a navigation light for ships for centuries.
Extra dag mogelijk in:
• Lynmouth: make e.g. the walk to Watersmeet, the meeting place of the
East Lyn river and Hoar Oak Water. (Zie in kader verderop)
• Ilfracombe, where there is the opportunity to explore the nearby Lundy Island & Marine Nat...
Bus Service:
Service 300 (Exmoor Coastal Link) which links Minehead in Somerset to
Lynmouth in Devon.
A corresponding service is also available between lllfracombe and Lynmouth
covering the North Devon coastline on Exmoor.

The coast is characterised by an alternation of:
1. Coastal heaths ( heather-covered coastal moorland),
2. Coastal woods (ancient oak woodlands).
3. Low farmed coast and marsh ( e.g. Vale of Porlock)
• Exmoor has the highest coastline in England and Wales with coastal hills rising to 433m at Culbone Hill.
These hills are mostly hog's-backed (varkensrug) in shape, with low cliffs and relatively gentle upper slopes.
• The cliffs are largely of sedimentary rocks such as sandstones and slates (=leien).
• The highest sheer (erg steile) cliff is about 250 m on Great Hangman,
which is the highest sea cliff in England and Wales.
• The cliffs are sliced by deep, steep-sided, wooded combes (valleys).
• At Porlock Weir, Lynmouth and Combe Martin are small harbours that used to be busy with coastal trade. Now sailing and fishing for pleasure
are their mainstay.

1. Coastal Heaths in Exmoor:
• An open landscape of rich semi-natural heathland interspersed with gorse and bracken (bracken being dominant on the coastal slopes).
• It is very exposed, with wide views both inland and out to sea.
• It consists of a mixture mainly of
1. Bell Heather (Erica cinerea) (Rode dophei) ,
2.
low growing western Gorse (Ulex gallii) (Westelijke gaspeldoorn) and
3. Ling (Calluna vulgaris) (Struikhei).
• Here is Whinchat (Paapje) country.
Exmoor may have the country's largest concentration of Whinchats. These summer visitors (zomergasten) like Exmoor's heaths and scrub.
Their close relative, the stonechat (Roodborsttapuit) is resident (standvogel) on Exmoor and requires a similar habitat.
The males can often be heard from the topmost spray of gorse or bramble (zingt vanaf zijn uitkijkpost, vaak boven in de top van een struik).
Many die in hard winters, and their requirement for heathland and a mild climate means that Exmoor is a national stronghold for thesebirds, especially near the coast.
• Heath is a semi-natural habitat.
- It is natural in the sense that
the plants are natural occurring
and not introduced or planted,
- but man-made in the sense that
man has excluded the trees which would normally grow in such location.
(In the absence of grazing by farm animals and deliberate burning, scrub and later woodland would take over.)
• Before the impact of man, Exmoor like most of Britain, was a wooded landscape.
• The Bronze Age clearance, coupled with heavy rainfall and
leaching, led to the formation of blanket bog (spreihoogveen) across the
upland plateau, which
in turn favoured heathland plants.
• Exmoor ponies at Whitstones overlooking Porlock Bay.
• These ponies are the closest breed to the original wild horses which roamed the northern hemisphere in prehistoric times.
Some say they are not a breed but a race of wild horse.
• There are only a few hundred on Exmoor. .

2. Coastal woods in Exmoor:
• Lichtblauw: de Combes and Cleaves.
• Exmoor has an exceptionally wooded coastline.
Trees don’t normally thrive on coasts – too much salt and wind in the air – .but Exmoor is different ! The coast is here relatively sheltered (beschut) : it faces north and the prevailing winds are south-westerly, and The Foreland shelters the eastern part of the coast from most
strong winds sweeping up the Bristol Channel.
• This allows for the unusual development of coastal woods.
It is predominantly deciduous coastal woodland much of which is relatively undisturbed ancient woodland.
• These oakwoods are growing on steep slopes (het zijn dus hellingbossen!) These slopes are .unstable. Therefore they occasional experience landslips (aardverschuivingen).
• In these oakwoods tend to dominate small, crooked (kromme) sessile oaks (Wintereiken) which have largely survived grazing through.their past management for timber, bark and charcoal and present.management for conservation.
• The oakwoods between Porlock and The Foreland represent the longest stretch of coastal woodland in England and Wales.
• Culbone Church, probably the most remote church on Exmoor, only accessible by walking the South West Coast Path for just over 1.5 miles from Porlock Weir.
• Its chief charm is its setting: deep in a shady, wooded small combe on the side of the
Bristol Channel.
• Dit is de kleinste parochiekerk in
Engeland.

3. Low farmed coast and marsh
(o.a. in de Vale of Porlock)
• Here and there the coast is broken by a valley, the largest and most interesting of which is the Vale of Porlock.
•
The village Porlock used too be a port but is now a mile or so inland and parts of the former sea-bed
are now used to grow arable crops.
1.The outer margin of the vale is formed by an enormous coarse shingle ridge.(kiezelwal) .
2. Just inland lies an area of tiny saltmarshes, giving way further inland to:
3. enclosed farmland of improved pastures and some cereal cropping.
1. The outer margin of the vale is formed by an enormous coarse shingle ridge (kiezelwal).
2. Just inland lies an area of tiny saltmarshes, giving way further inland to
3. enclosed farmland of improved pastures and some cereal cropping.
Porlock shingle ridge (= kiezelwal):
Across Porlock Bay lies a good example of a baymouth bar (=wal).
It is formed by the process of 'longshore drift' , whereby shingle is moved eastwards along the coast by waves backed by westerly winds.
The shingle is replaced by fresh material from cliff falls further west.
Most is of cobble (rolsteen) size, but smaller pebble-sized shingle survives
at the less exposed eastern end of the bay. (pebble = grind)
It once formed a spit (schoorwal) , leaving the bay open at the eastern
end.
It then formed a bar, closing the bay.
It has covered a woodland which grew on the marsh more than 5000
years ago. Tree stumps and peat are exposed on the shore at low tide
and known
as the submarine forest.
Groynes ( strandhoofden in de vorm van palenrijen ) were built along
the beach to protect the ridge
against
Recent storms have, however, caused the sea to breach the ridge and
form
a tidal lagoon on the marsh.
....Shingle (= kiezelstenen) is a mixture of: |
......
• Porlock shingle ridge (kiezelwal).
• Groynes (=palenrijen) were built along the beach to protect the ridge against erosion.
• A storm in 1996 breached the shingle ridge and conventional wisdom suggested reinforcing the beach. Instead, the Trust argued that, in the context of sea level rises and climate change, it made more sense to let the area go, allowing it to become saltmarsh.
The result is a valuable habitat that attracts little egrets, lapwing and oystercatchers.

The Valley of Rocks:
• The Valley of Rocks is a dry valley that runs parallel to the coast about half
a mile west of Lynton.
• Created during the Ice Age, it has spectacular weathered rock formations tors(=rotsige heuveltoppen) with names such as Castle Rock.
• The Valley of Rocks stands out as different from the rest of Exmoor.
Gone are the smoothly rounded hillsides and here are rocky ridges and tors.
Gone are the hog's back cliffs at places like Castle rock, where the cliff plunges vertically to the sea.
Gone also is the river which cut the valley.
• How did the valley lost its river?
It was part of the valley of the East Lyn River when it flowed to a
coastline further west than at present. The sea has since eroded the side of the valley at Lynmouth where the
river now drops to the sea, leaving the lower course through the valley
dry.
• When you walk in this valley, you will notice a number of scree slopes (puinhellingen). These contain a large number of fossils.
• Wild goats that populate the valley can be seen scrambling among the
rocky outcrops.
• The Valley of Rocks is a dry valley that runs parallel to the nearby sea and is capped on the seaward side by large rocks.
• A landscape of two halves:
1. the rugged, wilder steep-sided slopes and coastal cliffs
contrasting sharply with
2. the flatter, lower valley floor (dalbodem) that has seen much human influence and
change.
• The rugged Valley of the Rocks has its own population of wild goats, who can be seen scrambling amongst the rocky outcrops.
The present herd dates from the second half of the 20th century when three feral
goats were introduced from the Cheviots in Northumberland. They now number over
100.

Combes:
• The plateau is deeply incised and drained by fast flowing streams and rivers.
These river valleys gradually become more wooded as they descend, creating
near the coast spectacular deep, steep-sided, wooded combes (valleys = valleien, dalen).
• Exmoor is nationally important for its ancient oak woodlands. These wooded sites were probably too steep to farm with ease, but were intensively managed for charcoal and tanbark from medieval times.
Up until the First World War, oak was coppiced (gehakt) on a regular cycle and
the stunted, twisted outgrown coppice (hakhout) woodland we see across much
of Exmoor, is a relic of this management technique.
(coppice (hakhout) = underwood trees which are cut to near ground level every
few years
and then grow again from the stool (stoel, stronk,
stobbe)

sea
where the river enters in a dramatic cove.

Pontische rododendron (Rhododendron ponticum)

www.westcountry-walking-h...
1. Minehead ― Porlock Weir
... 16 km .... lichte wandeling
- Vooraf veldflessen vullen.
- Once out of the large seaside resort town Minehead through coastal
woodland onto high cliffs to traverse the high coastal heathland, with
splendid views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.
- There is also an alternative, more challenging “rugged coast path" for
anyone wanting a tougher beginning (it does add about an hour to your
walking time).
- Pass over Selworthy Beacon at 290m before descending to Hurlstone
Point.
-
The next stretch offers wonderful views of Porlock Bay.
- At the hamlet Bossington divert over field and farm tracks to reach the
hamlet and small harbour Porlock Weir.
2. Porlock Weir ― Lynmouth
...21 km.......middelzwaar
- Vooraf veldflessen vullen. De eerstvolgende gelegenheid is pas bij de
openbare toiletten
in County Gate.
- The stumps of an ancient woodland are visible when the tide is fully out at the hamlet Porlock Weir and after a steep climb from this quaint harbour hamlet, continue through the woods beyond Culbone Church reputed the smallest parish church in the UK...(zéér mooi gelegen!)
-
Continue on the coastpath through the wood.
bomen (o.a. Tamme kastanje en Douglasspar, Japanse larix, etc).
This section is thought to be the longest stretch of unbroken coastal woodlands in England. They are growing on steep, unstable slopes that
experience occasional landslips.
- At 308m, the path drops and gently descends to the village Lynmouth,
passing on the way, Foreland Point, Devon's most northerly point, with
spectacular views of the sea for much of the way.
- Hier zien we opnieuw high coastal heathland.
- Lynmouth is a small village on the seafront with a spectacular setting at the mouths of the deep wooded gorges of the East and West Lyn. rivers,
hemmed in by cliffs.
- Lynton is the small town at the top of the hill.
3. Lynmouth―Combe Martin [Kumbmártin]
... 21 km.... middelzwaar
- Take the Lynton & Lynmouth C... or climb the steps (150 hm) up the
steep hill to Lynton, and then it is a cliff top walk to the Valley of Rocks, equally famous for the wild goats that roam the valley as well as the rocky crags and pinnacles.
- A road is followed down past Lee Abbey, but a new stretch of path has been opened round Crock Point.
-
The path passes the hamlet Woody Bay; the surrounding area is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, famous for its wooded slopes and red deer.
- The path crosses the deep wooded Heddon Valley.
-
The path drifts inland across the slopes of Holdstone Down and climbs the summit of Great Hangman, which,
at 318 m, is the highest point on the Coast Path. There is a nice view in all directions.
To the south you see a patchwork of fields and hedges (lappendeken
van percelen en heggen)
- Both Holdstone Down and Great Hangman have high coastal heathland.
- At last drop down to Little Hangman and onto Combe Martin. Combe Martin is one of the longest villages in the country and the western coastal gateway to Exmoor National Park. Lovely place for rockpooling.
4. Combe Martin ― Woolacombe
... 21 km...... middelzwaar
- Combe Martin is a seaside village in a sheltered valley (Combe = valley).
- After the hilly days spent walking through the Exmoor National Park, the walk becomes a little gentler.
There are plenty of ascents and descents, but they tend to be on a smaller scale.
- There are a succession of low cliffs, little headlands and coves.
-
The Coast Path straightens out after the town Ilfracombe before again
hugging a number of
headlands and coves to the village Woolacombe.
- One of these headlands is Morte Point, a low but dramatic headland,
made up of rough gorse and heather.
It consists of eroded slate(= lei). Here many ships have come to grief.
